1969 Open House

On July 20th, 1969 it was official the hard work, vision and dedication had paid off. Bay Vista Methodist Heights held an Open House  for the housing development.

This modern Housing Development was composed of 268 units (100 two-bedroom units and 168 three-bedroom units), a Day Care Center and an Administration-Community Center.

In attendance was Congressman Lionel Van Deerlin, San Diego Mayor Frank Curran, and various community leaders.  This marked a proud day for the founding members of Bay Vista Methodist. They have been quoted saying:

"We do not pretend to have solved the problem of housing in our area but we are proud to be  involved in meeting a small portion of the critical needs."

1970 Leaving a Legacy

The Bay Vista Methodist Heights housing project was one of the largest  rent supplement programs on the West Coast. Bay Vista is an active and operating example of what a committed church and it's community can do.

The founders were on the right path in launching this project in San Diego., Ca.  Over 1,500 people applied for residence at the 268 unit complex. The complex would go on to house future generations over the next 40 + years.

1970 Community Outreach

Over the next 15 years  Bay Vista Methodist Heights programs continued to grow. The 10,000 sq. ft. children's day care center,
playground and auditorium for classes were put to good use.

The Gingerbread Nursery Day Care Center  was a delegated agency of the HeadStart  Program for over 10 years. Gingerbread opened a second center. Together the centers held the capacity to serve 240 children. The centers seved ages 2-7 years old coming from various enthic groups.

1986 Gingerbread Reaches Out

It's said that it takes a village to raise a child. Gingerbread called upon it's village when it successfully launched a "Foster Grandparents" program. The program built a deeper sense of community and connection. This is another example of the great vision and passion that Bay Vista has for building health communities.
